Funeral Homes
Funeral homes may be a source for memorial cards,
sympathy cards, a packet including the death certificate, a list of
guests, and possibly an invoice. The funeral home probably kept some
sort of record with at least the basic death and burial information.
Funeral homes are private businesses, and as a result their records
are private property and do not have to be made available to the
public. When a funeral home was sold, the records were not always
transferred to the new business owners. The previous owners may have
kept the records or destroyed them. Older records may be microfilmed
and may possibly be available at Family History Centers or other
libraries. Some funeral homes have place, allowed, their earlier
records to be made available via the Internet.
