Klockenhagen -- Völkshagen Cottage

Cottages are smaller living quarters usually found on a farmstead as adjoining houses. The living quarters were normally reserved for the use of retired parents or families hired to work on the farm.

The Völkshagen cottage was built around 1750 in the rural district of Bad Doberan. It was used as living quarters for two farm families up until 1920.

Construction - Two half-timbered building, noggings of clay, plastered. Thatched roof our to rush. Flooring mainly of tamped clay.

Gangway House - Gangway through the longitudinal axis of the house.

Main House - Living and working quarters, a limited amount of animal area, storage of harvested goods, all under one roof.

Smoke House - No chimney is present.

The vestibule of the cottage was employed by both families. Separate cooking areas (a flying buttress hearth) were to be found on the south side of the house: one on either side of the vestibule. Both of the living quarters consisted of one room, 2 chambers, as well as one small stable near the north gable.
